Starting a "Fall" Adventure
I have 3 weeks to start and finish a traveling exhibit piece on the Fall season. Usually, my traveling exhibit pieces are BIG as well as tongue in cheek attempts at everyday humor. I'm nostalgic about Fall however and my mountain home is exploding with color. Not long ago, I photographed a beautiful Scrub Jay just outside my dining room window. Now too, with all the leaves beginning to turn golden, brown and rust orange, I wanted to combine the 2 into a small piece representing the Fall season. So here goes... First the original contour drawing was created on 11 x 17 paper.... then enlarged at my local print shop to 150% ( about 17" x 25" a size nice enough for the subject and doable over the next 3 weeks as I likewise fold in holiday shopping, and Thanksgiving). 
Fabric over the drawing, and let's get started using my favorite media of pigment inks. ( the fabric really is WHITE!)

A peak at the IQA 2010 World of Beauty Awards
We seldom get to see events like this... in fact there is no comparison ( I know of ) to this event. I was lucky enough to go to this stage to receive an award from Ricky Tims, but I thought you might like to see the Best of Show award going to Sharon Schamber for her piece titled Mystique.
It is even less seldom we can get close enough to any quilt in any show to see the real detail. Sharon used black silk thread on white fabric to create exquisite quilting.
According to Sharon, this was 4 years off and on in the making. She said in this high contrast of black and white... a thread off in a stitch line created chaos.
Importantly, the most memorable award of the evening was received by the husband of recently passed Moira Cannata. Mr Cannata accepted his late wife's award from tearful Marti Mitchell for Moira's final quilt "Last Chance, Last Dance." Not a dry eye was in the room. What a lovely gentleman and loving husband!

IQA Houston 2010 Opens
Despite the drippy/rainy weather, yesterday was a great day in Houston. . Airport Shuttles and taxis arrived at local hotels by the dozens bringing quilters from all over the world to the George Brown Convention Center ( photo from 19th floor of the adjacent Hilton Hotel) for Wed nights preview to todays opening.

An early afternoon peak through the Exhibit Hall portholes revealed a lot of set up was in progress for the preview opening later last evening.
Class bulletins identifying still available classes were scoured over by those arriving
Of great importance was the entry dedication of this years Festival to the recently passed founder and editor of Quilters Newsletter.. Bonnie Leman

2nd place at Houston International
Awards Ceremony was beautiful and wonderful and I was lucky to walk away with a nice check.
"In Quito's Market" faired well in Art-Painted Surface category. Ricky Tims handed me moolah as the sponsor of the category. Thanks Ricky!!!
"I've been there!" ( meaning to Quito, Ecuador's open market) Ricky whispered as he handed me the envelope of prize money. IQA further honored this piece with a full page photo in their annual Festival Magazine titled "QUILT SCENE" available at both festival and some shops/book stores, etc.
I'll likely have a couple more pics when I finally get to my computer to upload. Thank You to all my well wishers!

Heading To Houston
I'll be at Houston International Quilt Festival Awards Events the next couple days. Wish me luck! I'll be back home late Wednesday night. BREATH PATT!!!
Into a different 'litter' box
Okay, so this isn't my norm... but it's just fun. Shown here are the first 6 of 13 or 14 block kits I've purchased. The patterns are from storyquilts.com. They are part of a series called Garden Patch Cats by Helene Knott. I've never met Helene, but I know she has a great sense of humor by looking at her adorable patterns.
And... the pattern was kitted with laser cut, pre fuse-backed fabric. The kits of fabric and pattern came from Quilters Paradise in Escondido California. The block background fabric is mine. These are plain fun... and really fast.
First up detail is Mush-Kit ..... a kitty shaped like a mushroom.Each pattern comes with a recipe using the ingredient in the kitty name.... obviously this one including mushrooms.
I particularly like the "Stalker" as in Celery. I know cats that fit this name, don't you?
How does "Eggplant Purrmesan" sound?
Ofcourse, there is also "Avocato"
I seem to recall this is "walla walla kitty".. named for the sweet onion.
Then there is Brocco-kitty. Yes.. he does look like broccoli!
I do need to add a highlight to these kitty eyes.... and have yet to blanket stitch around them. I best do that before I fuse any more blocks/kits.
