Each Year, Houston IQA offers a silent auction from teachers donations made to support scholarships. All donations must be small quilts, and since I already have an unquilted tiger eyes, I think I will quilt it more densely than my class samples and donate that. For this piece, I'll use 2 layers of batting to provide a bit more stability. So pin and get goin' Patt.
I'll begin the same way I do my samples of this image... a simple and casual curvy zig and zag at the edges of the black tufts of fur. Note: it's not necessary or even helpful to follow the feathered edges of the painted area. Near the edge is good enough!

Hi Patt, when you use two batts for your piece what do you use? I have heard lately from longarmers using a thin cotton and a wool batt. I bet the effect is great and am going to try it. Will have to try on a smaller quilt though. I can quilt a pretty big one on my Bernina but I don't think I'd do as well with two batts on a domestic machine.

Hello Cher.... This is a great question about using 2 batts. I will tell you for this very small piece... I was comfortable using 2 cotton batts (because it was in my batt stash calling me) ... but thats not my norm. I am finding for some wall pieces, I like the extra stability that 2 batts bring. I more recently use 2 layers of Matildas Own wool/poly blend ( it's low loft) for my art pieces. The poly addition helps which shape retention. Wool alone doesn't always hold shape well. Two layers of Matildas work great unless you are heavily thread painting to the edge and facing rather than binding. Still doable, just steam blocking is crucial. I think I might post this as a separate subject too. Matildas Own (Australian) is starting to show up in North America. It's lovely stuff. I believe E-Quilter has it by the yard. For a really large wall quilt, I hear what you are saying about wool in front, cotton (for weight) in back. Wool alone doesn't hang well on the wall... I've seen it!
